Neither Lesson Nor Vengeance

Today has been a long day at work. It is cold outside, and it's wet as well. By the time I arrived at the supermarket, it was also dark. And as happens so often, out of four disability carparks, two were occupied by cars without disability parking permit. I was not happy at all.

Disabilities And Purchasing Power

Today I tweeted that people with disabilities are the 3rd largest market in the United States according to the US Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP). I admit, the news did not surprise me much. People with disabilities realise they have buying power, unfortunately, most businesses don't seem to understand that. I remember bumper stickers saying "I'm disabled, I vote, and I spend".

Memories Of Disability Rights Protests And Police Officers

I am a disability rights activist. I have encountered police officers at various protests I was at. Often, they just stood in line, chatting with us. Other times, they arrested us. By and large, it was good fun, but more importantly, we often got results.

I Use A Wheelchair. Does That Make Me Wheelchair-Bound?

Every time I do a disability awareness presentation, we devote some time to "using the right words". I'm far from being Politically Correct (PC) for the sake of being PC, but the fact remains, language has undeniable power. One expression that is used often enough which I wish faded out of people's consciousness is "wheelchair bound".

Public's Attitudes - Blogging Against Disablism Day 2009

Disablism. Attitudes. It's insidious, really. Sometimes disablism happens when you don't really expect it, and someone looking from the outside wouldn't see it. And it tends to happen so often that many of us with disabilities tune it out. I was at the grocery store last week and something happened that broke through my mental "idiocy filter".
