Rebuilding Christchurch - An Opportunity For Accessibility

Christchurch went through two devastating earthquakes in 6 months, and thousands of "smaller" quakes. People are now looking at rebuilding. It will be costly, but this is an opportunity for Chrischurch to become the most accessible city in New Zealand.

NH State Rep Suggests People With Disabilities Should Be Sent To Siberia

I just heard of comments made by New Hampshire State Representative Martin Harty to the effect that people with disabilities should either be killed or sent to Siberia. I am not entirely surprised this kind of attitude still exists. But I am saddened.

Everyday Devices As Assistive Technology

The convergence of dedicated assistive technology and everyday products can only increase the inclusion of people with disabilities in society. As I discussed in my presentation at the New Zealand Computer Society's Innovation Conference last year, more and more assistive technology is appearing into every day products. I just read another example of this happening.

Jetstar Continually Fails Passengers With Disabilities

Today the New Zealand Herald published an article about an apology from budget airline Jetstar - they apologised for 'inhumane' treatment of a passenger asking a refund on a flight because of the 22 February 2011 earthquake that hits Christchurch (which, incidentally, has killed 160 people at the time of this writing).

The story is appaling - but the cynical part of me just isn't surprised. It isn't the first time I hear about that airline treating people badly. Of interest to me here, is the multiple stories of Jetstar treating passengers with disabilities like crap.

Lawsuit Against Disney For Lack Of Accessibility

It has just been announced that there is a class action lawsuit being lodged against Disney for "Inaccessible Websites and Failure to Accommodate Blind Persons in Violation of ADA". This is an interesting lawsuit, worth keeping an eye on what is happening.
